Product Review: 2013 Topps Pro Debut Hobby Box

This past week Topps released their 2013 Topps Pro Debut Minor League product. As it was last year, the set design and flavor is comparable to the 2013 Topps Series 1 MLB product. The difference between the two are the relic designs and different manufactured patches to chase down. The product also has four cut signatures to collect from the movie Bull Durham. The other hot item to chase is Yasiel Puig, as this is his first card with Topps.
This is a very interesting product to pick up, it has all the top minor league prospects wrapped into one product. You'll find players already called up to the majors along with those that are going to be late summer call-ups.
The basics of the 2013 release is 24 packs with 8 cards per pack, you will receive 2 Autographs per box including 1 Relic and 1 Manufactured Patch. Base cards have Gold Parallels along with 15 Photo variations to hunt. These 15 are the top players within the 2013 product.
The new bonus this year is the guaranteed Manufactured Patch, these can be either a Mascot patch or a Hat Logo Patch. Both are numbered inserts and depending on who you pull could add some secondary market value from your box.

So lets see how we did in our break:

Base Cards: 183 (0 doubles)
Base Card Gold Parallel: 1 - Rock Shoulders /50
Relic: 1 - Chih Fang Pan
Autograph: 2 - Luis Merejo, Mike Piazza
Manufactured Patch: 1 - Buster Bison Mascot /120

One of the reasons we like this product is all the different minor league teams associated within it. It's pretty cool to see the different team logo's and uniforms. The Gold Parallels are numbered /50 and are lower than the MLB Gold Parallels which are /2013. These run well in the secondary market, and can be a great hit if you pull one of the top players.
The Relic we pulled of Chih Fang Pan is nothing too exciting as it's a single swatch but the design is not too bad. Like how Topps matched the color of the uniform to the card. Our Manufactured Patch was Buster T. Bison the mascot for the Buffalo Bison's. It's an interesting insert and numbered to /120 which adds value but would have liked a Hat Logo Patch instead personally. It's really not a patch per say but more of a felt type of material around the picture of the mascot. Mascots do have a following in the market but not a PC keeper for us.
We pulled two pitchers for our autographs. Both are sticker autographs and not numbered. The same design is used as the base cards from Series 1. The Mike Piazza is not the former Mets catcher but the recent pitching prospect. On these autographs either you will pull a top player or one of these not called up players which you will have to sit and wait on. They also have parallels for the autographs which no matter whom you would pull will have an added value immediately.
So we pulled an average type of box. With 220 cards in the base set we were short by almost 40 cards. If your a set builder your not looking too bad at finishing the set. The 4 hits per box is worth the cost of the box under $100 even if one of the hits is a manufactured patch. A hit is a hit and more value for the customer in a product is never a bad thing. If your a Bowman collector this is the set for you, if you can't wait for players to develop then pass by this one. Would love to run a box break on one of these boxes but with the amount of the teams involved it would be impossible to run, but would have been a fun one.

Most cards/hits pulled in our breaks end up on our site storefront www.packgambler.com, our COMC account ThePackGambler, or our eBay account thepackgambler. If you are interested in any of the cards we have mentioned please send us an e-mail at packgambler@gmail.com

Product Review: 2013 In The Game Hockey Draft Prospects Hobby Box

So went into the LCS and saw the latest product from In The Game on the shelve 2013 Draft Prospects. I never bought a box of ITG before but have always liked their designs and relics cards that I've seen. This box wasn't on the radar but did standout among the boxes on the shelve. So I looked at the sell sheet and noticed that it's only 12 cards per box. This peaked my interest even more and decided to bust open the box.
Before we get into the box hits here are the basics of the box. Each box will provide 7 Premium Base Cards, 3 Hard-Signed Autograph cards and 2 Game-Used Memorabilia cards. The focus as you couldn't tell already is around the Draft of 2013. The base set is 180 cards deep with three different parallels to chase down, Emerald /50, Gold /20 and Onyx 1/1. The parallels are not printed serial numbers but stated print runs from ITG.
The Autograph checklist is pretty deep with each player having 2 different cards. All are on-card autographs and include Parallels of Gold /20 and Silver Short Prints of Drouin, MacKinnon and Jones. Game Used Relics come in Single, Dual and Triple players along with Patch's and Nameplates. These range from /110 to 1/1 print runs. being that you find 2 per box you should hit something decent in your box.

This is a pretty good box to pick up when you have the potential of all of this for around $100 per box. So I decided to rip it open and see what our first box of ITG would deliver:

Base Cards: 2 - Jared McCann, Jackson Whistle
First Round Pick: 2 - Mike Bossy, Grant Fuhr
First Round Pick Emerald: 1 - Kari Lehtonen (Print Run of 50)
Draft Surprises: 1  Doug Gilmour
Draft Surprises Emerald: 1 - Patrick Roy (Print Run of 50)
Draft Prospects Teammates Dual Relic: 1 - Eric Roy / Ryan Pulock (Print Run of /90)
Autograph: 2 - Nikita Zadorov, Mirco Mueller
First Round Pick Nameplate: 1 - Joey Hishon "2nd H" 1/1
Autograph Silver Short Print: 1 - Nathan MacKinnon

Lets catch our breath for a second and start at the top. The base cards are a nice design with a foil technology on normal stock. They are a little sensitive on the corners so be careful when pulling them out of the box. The First Round Pick design is nice as well. ITG doesn't have an NHL license so they used the Minor league team logos and hide the NHL logos on the photos. This doesn't take away from the cards at all and are very nice.
We pulled two Emerald base cards of Lethtonen and Roy. You can't tell from the scans but the foil is Emerald on them and again they do not have a serial number printed on them, but they are /50.
Love that the Autographs are all on-card. This makes the secondary market high on these players. Not sure if there are redemption's for players or if they are all in. Either way great to have them on-card. The design is the same as the base but they do not have foil technology.
ITG is famous for providing really nice relics and in our case we pulled a Teammates Dual Relic. Happy with the different colors for each player which I believe always make a difference to collectors looking to fill their PC. The Roy and Pulock is decent, not serial numbered but the stated run is /90.
This box just kept giving as we worked through it. Next up was a beautiful First Round Pick Nameplate of Joey Hishon which is a 1/1. What ITG did for this release was they cut the letters in half and have 1st/2nd (Top/Bottom) of each letter from the players jersey. Interesting way to do it, and add an extra chase to find all of the letter pieces to complete the nameplate. On the back of the Nameplate it is printed 1/1 which is nice to have instead of the stated print run.
Now the last card in the box was this amazing pull of Nathan MacKinnon Silver Short Print On-Card Autograph. Just could not believe this hit comin after a Nameplate 1/1 in the same box. There is not a stated print run for these so no way of knowing how short this run is, but to pull the potential 1st Pick overall in the 2013 Draft is pretty special.
This was an amazing box to bust and couldn't have asked for anything more from it. With only 5 cards from the base set in each box it would be tough to put a complete set together and should provide a very good secondary market for the cards. The emeralds being /50 also have good secondary value and have seen them already selling for around $10. On-card Autographs and Relics guaranteed are always a great thing and ITG doesn't disappoint. If your a hockey fan and have a chance to pick up one of these boxes I would highly recommend it. Very good value for what you get per box.

The Pack Gambler Retro Break: 2008-09 Upper Deck SPx Hockey Hobby Box

We went to our LCS (Local Card Store) 2 weeks ago and noticed a box at the top of the shelve. It was a small box and sort of out of sight of the big new ticket items into the store. Recently we've been intrigued by older boxes coming in but decided not to grab it this time in. This past week while coming in to pickup some new stock we noticed the box was still there. Without hesitation we asked for the box to be put into the order. The box was a 2008-09 Upper Deck SPx Hockey Hobby box, not really a Retro product per-say but since it's been out 4 years we'll group it into this category.
The owner of the shop had a sticky note attached with "Stamkos Rookie" on it. This was the hard to find $250 Stamkos Rookie card that a lot of collectors search out for. We weren't too interested in that so much as what the product delivered. Within each box you will pull 1 Numbered Rookie Jersey card, 1 Numbered Rookie Jersey Autographed card, 1 Winning Combos Relic card and 1 Winning Materials Relic Card. There are also SPxcitement numbered cards and SPX Rookies which are numbered as well. All this comes in a 18 packs with 4 cards per pack assortment. Not too bad for a 2009 product, this is why we decided to take the plunge and see what we could pull.

Like all Retro boxes we had low expectations on this box, we were more interested in writing a piece on it for our Retro breaks than anything else. However this turned out to be one of the craziest and most fulfilling Retro Box Breaks we have ever had:

Base Cards: 69 (0 Doubles)
SPxcitement: 2 - Ilya Kovalchuk /999, Ron Hextall /999
SPX Rookies: 1 - Jared Ross /499
Winning Combos Dual Relic: 1 - Marion Gaborik/Pierre-Marc Bouchard (Wild)
Winning Materials Dual Relic: 1 - Sidney Crosby
SPX Rookies Dual Relic: 1 - Dan LaCosta /1299
SPX Rookies Dual Relic Autograph: 1 - Steve Mason /999
Winning Trios Relic: 1 - Crosby/Ovechkin/Malkin /99
Redemption: Autographed FlashBack Fabrics Ray Bourque (Expired 12/19/2010)
Before we get into the cool relics and bonus hits lets talk a bit about the product. The SPx base cards have some of the best technology for 2009. The design matched with the holographic/laser lines on each card are fantastic. We were 30 cards away from completing the 100 card base set from this box so we might look around for those needed and complete this one. The SPX Rookies which are apart of the complete set of the product have the same technology designs but are numbered. Your going to find some decent guys in here and the BV on them is $6-15 which is really good.
The SPxcitement cards are nice and extra bonus is they are numbered. You can find some star players in this insert set which can have some good BV to them like Gretzky, Stamkos and Crosby. Not sure if you'll find 2 per box but still a nice touch to the product.
Here we go into the Relics/Autographs, first up is the Winning Combos. This is a nice Dual Relic card of two players form the same team or comparable players from the past or present. The swatch of jersey is not too small and the card design is nice. The Gaborik/Bouchard we pulled is decent and has two different colors of jersey so an added feature we liked. Next up is our Winning Materials Dual Relic of Sidney Crosby. Was super pumped we pulled this nice card. Anything Crosby in a Relic is a hot item. This one like the Combo Relic above has two different colors just as we like it.
SPX Rookie Relics and Relic Autographs are always cool to have for any player. Love they are numbered even though the LaCosta is numbered high at 1299 and the Mason Relic/Autograph was numbered /999. Both are decent hits and Goalies are always popular on the secondary market.
Onto our Bonus extra hits. We almost hit the floor when we pulled these two cards from the box. Not expecting much out of a box and then pulling these two was outstanding. The Winning Trios Relic of Sidney Crosby, Alexander Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin is amazing. The card is numbered to /99 and is one of the best Trios Relic to pull from the product. Four years later these three players are still the top in the league and will be a piece nice in anyone's collection.
Redemption's are never fun to pull unless you can beat the deadline. Our Ray Bourque Redemption however expired over 2 years ago. We have seen this card in online auctions and trades in the past and would have been a dual relic with his autograph. The odds on pulling one of these is 1:252 packs, and even though unnumbered would have been a great add to a PC. Upper Deck has stated they don't honor expired redemption cards, they did have a promo at the Fall Expo here in Canada last year in regards to expired unscratched cards where you could hand it in for a replacement card. We're going to write to Upper Deck and see if they would be able to provide a replacement on this card or if they have another promo in the fall at the Expo where we could bring it. Too bad it wasn't 2009 or late 2010 so we could send it in for this card.
So for a Retro break this did extremely well. Aside form the $28 in base card and $80 for the Bourque Redemption book value we came away with $172 in hits. That is truly amazing to find out of this product. Now we knew there were some great hits to find in this but you never expect to hit an $80 Triple relic card. Not all 2008-09 SPx boxes will have the same results but like all retro breaks you never know what you might find in those older boxes. Always worth the gamble to see inside.

If we do mange to have a replacement for the Bourque redemption we'll post an article all about it.

Most cards we pull in our breaks end up in our COMC account (ThePackGambler), eBay account (thepackgambler) or within our sites storefront (www.packgambler.com). If you are interested in any of the cards we have mentioned please send us an e-mail at packgambler@gmail.com

Product Review: 2013 Cryptozoic DC Comics Superman The Legend Trading Cards

Well if there will ever be a Non-Sport box we open this would be it. The story about how we came to bust this one open is simple, 1 Sketch card 1/1 per box. Excuse me? Yes you heard us right, and that was all what we needed to hear to pick up this box.
We jumped ahead to the goodies within the first two sentences of this review already so lets go back a bit and provide some insight into the product. Cryptozoic has been increasing their product brands from Film and TV shows to now DC Comics Superman. Good timing around the opening of the movie this year even though it's not tied together.
So the premise of this product is pretty straight forward with 24 packs per box with 5 cards per pack. A base set consists of only 62 cards so doing the math you will have a complete set in 1 box. Inserts are in this product with Foil Parallel Base cards, Alternate Reality Foil, Secret Origins, Women of Superman and X-Ray Vision cards. These range from 1:12 to 1:24 packs.
As we said above this Cryptozoic product has 1 Sketch card per box, but you can also find Printing Plates and Redemption's for a 4x6 Sketch card. Sketch cards are always hot in the secondary market, and with a product based on a comic of a well-known superhero this is a pretty good buy.

So with this all in mind and not being all in the know of Non-Sports cards we thought it would be kinda cool to step outside of the circle on this one. Here is how we did:

Base Cards: 104 (1 complete set with 41 doubles)
Foil Base Cards: 6
Secret Origins: 2
Alternate Worlds: 2
Women of Superman: 2
X-Ray Heat: 2
Sketch Cards: 2 - David Rabbitte, Unknown Artist

So overall this is a pretty good box to purchase. Base cards are nice and span across Superboy to Superman in different years of the comics life. The art on each card is pretty cool as well. You make a complete set plus only 22 from making 2 sets. Find this a little funny as to why the 24 packs then, you could shorten it up to 18 packs with 5 cards per pack and with the same odds. With 18 packs you would be looking at 10-12 doubles instead of the 41 you have with 24 packs.
The Foil Parallels are nice and on some of the designs they look amazing and bring out the base cards to another level. This is the same with the Secret Origins and Alternate Worlds. Each of them as also Foil technology and look great.
The Women of Superman has some nice looking cards but would have liked to have seen something else instead. Kind of a boring insert for us, but the designs of the pictures kept us entertained. X-Ray Heat is another one that we could do without. These come in die-cut form with a heat generated front that when you either hold them or put them close to heat an image is shown. They are hard to display and after a while of holding them you get tired of doing it and forget about it. We pulled 2 of these in our box and beat the odds by 1.
The Sketch card was where our main focus was. Surprisingly enough we managed to pull 2 of these in our box. We heard of it happening with someone else as well so this could be more common than the 1 per box. Ether way these are cool. There is not a stamped serial number on the back but a printed 1/1 is at the top of the back. Also the wording of "This original hand-drawn card was created exclusively for the DC Comics Superman The Legend Trading Card Set." You can never complain about pulling a 1/1 even if it is a guaranteed hit in a box. The ones we pulled were nice lots of detail in both but the Superwomen sketch is our preferred one even if we don't know the artist that drew it.
So if your looking for some entertaining fun in a Non-Sport product this would be it. Love the designs of the art on each card and with a Sketch card per box you can't go wrong. The secondary market was hot around the time of the release but the Sketch cards have cooled down a bit and you might be able to find a nice one for $16-18. We missed out on the Batman box earlier this January when it was released. If we knew about it then we would have picked up a box as well. We're hopeful that Cryptozoic continues with the comic theme and brings out a Green Lantern, The Flash and others within the DC Comics franchise.

The Pack Gambler Retro Break: 1994-95 Fleer Ultra Series 1 Hockey Hobby Box

This month's Retro Box break takes us back 18 years with 1994-95 Fleer Ultra Series 1 Hockey. Really doesn't seem that long ago when we use to get our allowance and run to the store to pick some packs up. These were part of the glossy and fancy cards that were recently popping up within the hobby. For 1994-95 these were a pretty good pack to pick up for around $2.50 a pack (if we remember right) and when hobby shops had sealed boxes for $79.99.
We never bought boxes back then, only packs so opening a box of this we thought would be fun and interesting to see. As with all of our Retro box breaks we don't expect much to come out of them, it's more of an interest on how times were different over a decade ago with collecting cards.
So the basics of this box were the following: 36 packs per box with 12 or 14 cards per pack. Each pack will include an insert from the Series 1 selection of Ultra Power, Pad Men, All-Stars, Award Winners, and Fedorov Highlights. Pulling an insert in each pack was a big thing back then so hence the reason for the $79.99 price tag on a back back then.
The two toughest inserts to pull were the Ultra Power and Pad Men. Both were 1 per box and were sought after by collectors not only due to the scarcity but the designs of them were pretty cool for 1994-95.
Again box and product is strictly about the inserts and not much about the base cards or even rookies in the product. Collectors would pick up packs to just collect the inserts and not care too much about the base cards.
So lets see how we did on this Retro Box Break:

Base Cards: 306 (Complete 250 card set with 56 doubles)
All-Stars: 17 (Complete set of 12 with 5 doubles)
Trophies: 5 - Gretzky, Brodeur, Bourque, Graves, Fedorov
Scoring Kings: 5 - Gilmour, Bure, Gretzky, Lemieux, Fedorov
Ulta Power: 1 - Jason Arnott
Padmen: 1 - Felix Potvin
Fedorov Highlights: 7
So breaking this box was fun but a little tricky with opening the packs and moving through the cards. The packs and the cards inside were a little stuck due to the glossy finish on them add on the 18+ years of them sitting in a sealed box and you run into bricks in packs. Carefully you can ease them into breaking off from each card, but you have to be careful or else the finish will come off them as you move them off each other.

Every pack came with an insert which is great and we even finished a complete set of the Series 1 Base cards, along with a All-Star game insert set. Not too bad for this box, as we were not expecting too much coming out of it.
Some of the inserts were nice and of star players too, so value of opening this box is pretty decent. Again your not breaking the bank or finding a treasure in here, but for a box full of inserts it's a good break.
If you have a chance to open one of these boxes, just be careful on the cards that are stuck together. You'll have fun going through breaking the box and will enjoy the inserts it provides.

Most cards we pull in our breaks end up in our COMC account (ThePackGambler), eBay account (thepackgambler) or within our sites storefront (www.packgambler.com). If you are interested in any of the cards we have mentioned please send us an e-mail at packgambler@gmail.com

Product Review: 2012-13 Panini Rookie Anthology Hobby Box

This is a very exciting time for anyone collecting hockey products. Not only will the Double Rookie Class be out within the next few months but 2012-13 Panini Rookie Anthology just came out! Our Hockey Product of the year for 2012 was back and we were very excited to see what surprises Panini had for us collectors.

Back for it's second year, Anthology brings together a nice 100 card base set that includes gold foil stamping on the front of the cards this year. The key to Anthology though is the inserts, autographs and memorabilia that is packed into each box. Let's start with the inserts; just like last year, Panini has included it's other Hockey Brands into Anthology. The brands include Elite, Crown Royale, Contenders, Titanium, and the popular Luxury Suite. The inserts are spread among these brands which provide some really nice new designs in the product. Most of the inserts are numbered but you will find some not numbered.

Autographs are plenty within this years product and provide some of the rookies from last year including Krug, Baertschi and Kreider. These are found in a number of different mixed brands, but are most sought after in the Rookie Treasures line. These come in three different 3 levels with a different serial number and player at each level starting with /699 down to patches at /25.

Panini's Memorabilia has always been very well done and they are especially great about patches and dual color pieces. This is no exception with Anthology, you will find Swatches, Jumbo Patches, and Sticks. We're sure they might have other goodies in there as well but these are the ones we have heard or seen thus far. Typically you won't find a serial number on swatches or singles pieces of relics with Panini. however on the patches, dual swatches and other memorabilia pieces they will always include them. Most times they are low serial numbers as well. The Rookies swatches are in the 700 range as stated above for the Rookie treasures, but they do include an autograph.

Panini Prizm is in full flight with Football starting it last year and Baseball continuing earlier this year. No surprise to anyone when Panini announced that Hockey was joining into the fray. To start it off right, Panini also stated that this years Box Topper in Anthology was going to be a three card pack of Prizm. Pretty cool and great way to get the Prizm name out among hockey collectors. The three card pack could also include a hit in them which include Red, Blue or Gold parallels or even Autographs.

Some of the basics of each hobby box goes as follows: Panini has continued with the same packaging format with 10 packs per box and 5 cards per pack. This does not include the 1 bonus box topper pack of Prizm. Each box is to include 4 Memorabilia or Autograph cards with at least 1 Autograph per box.

So from the beginning of this year Anthology has been on our minds and very much anticipated. Hate having very high hopes for a product and then once it arrives it isn't what you thought it should and could be so we tried to stay calm and wait for June 5th. Well the day came and we opened our first of many boxes to come for 2012-13 Panini Rookie Anthology, lets see how we did:

Base Cards: 43 (0 doubles)
Elite Rookies: 1 - Jordan Nolan /999
Contenders Legacies: 1 - Doug Gilmour /999
Contenders Hart Trophy: 1 - Evgeni Malkin /999
Contenders Vezina Trophy: 1 - Carey Price /999
Contenders Stanley Cup: 1 - Sidney Crosby /999
Elite Intensity: 1 - Steven Stamkos /500
Titanium Game Gear Swatch: 1 - Erik Karlsson
Crown Royale Lords of the NHL Swatch: 1 - Shane Doan
Luxury Suite Pacific Relic: 1 - John Tavares (Stick)
Titanium Bronze Autograph: 1 - Brandon Mashinter
Rookie Treasures Autograph/Dual Relic: 1 - Lane Macdermid /699
Crown Royale Towering Defenders: 1 - Shea Weber Prime Patch /10
Prizm Base Cards: 2 - Jarome Iginla, Carter Ashton
Prizm Autograph: 1 - Chay Genoway Prizm Refractor

Wow is the only word we thought of after busting open this box. The base design this year is great. The added gold foil mentioned above does really add something to the cards. Very sharp looking and overall look and feel is improved from 2011-12.
We like the Elite Rookies insert even though it is a little plain. Still they are numbered out of /999 which is the norm with these cards. The Contenders Legacies is also a nice card, but again a little plain. Understanding they are taking Black and White photography and putting it onto a white border card can never be easy. These will create value as they are also numbered /999 and the checklist has a lot of hall of fame players in there.
The Contenders Awards cards are really nice. Each of them are numbered /999 and we just happened to pull three of the top payers in the NHL. The Black background on the cards with the Trophies front and center are a really nice design.
A really cool insert we pulled was the Steven Stamkos Intensity. this is a acetate card and almost looks like it's an artist sketch of Stamkos. Really light weight and very clear and non-scratched card. These are only /500 which could prove to become a very good investment to get them early on for your collection. We can see these jumping up in price and staying strong on the secondary market.
Onto the Relics; the first two up are the Karlsson and Doan relics. These are pretty simple and not too exciting relics that came out of the box. Both card designs are nice and the relics are clean.
The next Relic is the Tavares Stick from Luxury Suite. This is a really nice hit and could be a bonus hit in this box. Not too sure but we didn't see anyone else pull one of these in their boxes. Either way a nice hit and player match on this one.
Our first rookie autograph is Mashinter in the Bronze Titanium. Not too bad but not serial numbered. So you could only guess how many of these were produced. Not too bad a design on these ones. Finding on in Silver would look just as nice as well. Our second rookie autograph was our Rookie Treasures of Lane Macdermid. Similar to last years design with the dual jersey autographs but with a little more gold trim and designs on the corners. These are really nice and wanted rookie cards for collectors.
In our last pack of the box we were amazed to pull this Shea Weber Prime Patch numbered out of only 10 cards. The patch it's self is not thick but does incorporate three colors of the jersey.
Lastly Prizm. We saved this bonus box topper pack till last and was surprised to find the Genoway Prizm Autograph. It's not numbered but still a nice Autograph parallel which should draw a lot of interest in the secondary markets. The Prizm design is the same as the Football and Baseball before it. Really like this product and can't wait for it to be released this year.
Overall this is a must buy for anyone. We were lucky to come away with six hits in the box not including the Genoway Prizm Autograph which would make it seven! With a guarantee of 4 hits per box I'm sure a lot of collectors will be finding extra bonus hits within their boxes. This is not a box to be looking for or collecting rookies, but more so the hits. Even the numbered inserts are really great in the product and add a lot of value to your box. Boxes are running at around $100 currently at the release date and should stay consistently at that price for the year. For a loaded product like Anthology you can't get much better than this. We'll have to see if this years product can hold on to product of the year, so far it's looking really good.
